On January 26, 2016 25 year old Sydney experienced a severe ischemic stroke that left her right side paralyzed and without the ability to eat, speak, or swallow. She regained some function of her right arm, was able to speak a few words and began to walk during her intensive inpatient rehabilitation, but needed further outpatient therapy through the services of Ability KC.
With the help of speech, occupational, and physical therapy she is now able to speak, eat, walk, run, and and has since returned to medical school. Her Ability KC therapists are so proud of the hard work she put in to getting back to her passion to become a doctor. She is now a second year medical student at A.T. Still University and hopes to become a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist to help others with similar experiences such as her own.
